Spring Cleaning

Standard

i now fully understand the term ‘Spring Cleaning’. it was always known to me only as the time before our family celebrates CNY (Chinese New Year) that we would clean the whole house and get rid of broken or unwanted things; every year around that time of the year. why the ‘spring’ before the ‘cleaning’ – i never knew.

i’ve come to loathe that word ‘spring cleaning’ because there was always so much to clean, the season was super hot especially at that time of year, and to make things worse, my nose is super-sensitive to dust. i got into sneezing frenzies and i sweat buckets!

back then in our old house, we didn’t have closed kitchen cabinets, only open shelves and things would be stacked high up near the ceiling. my grandmother had kept and kept and kept those ‘nice and expensive’ pots and pans in plastic bags and had rarely taken them down to use because they were ‘precious’, only to be used for some special occasion that never came; and they would collect dust for the whole year till we clean it during ‘spring cleaning’ before CNY. oh the tediousness!! and did i mention no use of vacuum cleaners and the luxury of having an air-con too!

being here in a 4-season country, i’m getting the meaning why it’s called SPRING cleaning. i found out that living in snow is a hassle, but i just got to find out that it can also be costly in terms of premise/road maintenance. after all the snow had melted, we saw potholes EVERYWHERE on the roads. it sure wasn’t there before winter when we got here, and it’s not only where the busses or trucks frequent. it’s a good thing the council here took quick action on those potholes, they were getting bigger and bigger by the day, so unlike in Kajang. :P!

on our balcony, the tiles where the snow had stayed the longest is chipping. now that it’s warmer i can go outside, so i cleaned the windows and the balconies (we got 3 balconies, 2 more to be done; phew!) and there was so much dirt! the pail of water turned ‘brak-brak’ even before i was halfway though. plus, the whole apartment outside is mostly painted in white!! A.GO.NY!

from the playground downstairs, i observed some units having renovation work, people shifting and cleaning houses, waste paper baskets are installed around the park area, pots with flowers are put on the balconies (should have one of those but scared later all die under my hands!)… etc.

now that things are cleaned, there’s a sense of fulfillment and a kind of peace. the home is clean again, and this little girl can run free and easy.

Fairy Tale

Standard

At this point in time, I’m probably living the ‘dream’ of most Malaysians; experiencing snow. We grew up thinking that it must be the best time of the season in the world, having snowfights, sitting by the fireplace having hot beverages, waking up to be greeted by presents (think Christmas), skiing, snowboarding etc… The tellie does well in burning all these beautiful images into our minds.

Well, without intention of bursting your bubble, it was a nice feeling when I, from our apartment,  first saw the snow drifting down  to the walkway. Such sense of peace and calmness flooded me when I beheld the sight. Li-Ann was gleeful, like a child getting her christmas present, looking out the window every now and then just to make sure that the dream was really a reality.

Reality bites. After 3 months of sub-zero temperatures, icy and slippery roads, it is, after all, a fairy tale. I feel what every European feels now; WE WANT THE SUN!!!!! Personally, I am really tired of wearing layers and layers of clothes before going; for goodness sake, I’ve never missed my slippers so much before in my life. I now share the sentiments of the people here, the longing for spring, for greens, for bright sunshine, to have walks in the park, walking lazily, looking at the architectures, having ice cream or sitting by the walkway sipping coffee; generally doing nothing significant, just enjoying the warmer side of mother nature.

20-MARCH-2009: OFFICIAL START OF SPRING

Never Ending Snow

Standard

it’s been snowing and snowing and snowing for the past 3 days, it stopped for only a short while and just when you think it’s stopped, tiny little snowflakes started floating around, and then it all came down again.  we’ve been so bored not being able to go out and Annette’s gone on holiday for the whole week (she usually drops by on Mondays and that makes all the difference throughout the week), so both Arielle and I were left staring at each other with only the few toys she has, the TV and her ever-fav-but-soon-to-be-bored-with Sesame Street videos online; think we watch it too often!  well anyways, because i don’t know what else to entertain her and myself with, and the snow stopped falling for a while, i took the opportunity to brave the freezing cold weather and went out downstairs to the private park for a stroll (or something like that). also because i thought it would be fun playing with so much snow, maybe i’d lie on it and make like an angel, you know, flap my hands up and down!

in actual, i was even more excited than arielle was coz i was so happy building snowcastles and she was getting frustrated that she couldn’t get to hold anything!! awww… so, in the end, we went back in earlier than was planned. ah! the sacrifices a mother has to make…. otherwise, i think the balcony will be filled with snow castles!! wouldn’t that be such an impressive sight for my husband when he gets back!

It snowed this morning…

Standard

‘Twas a cool day, nice weather to sleep in; I had to drag myself out of the couch. Yea, the couch. I was sleeping outside the bedroom for the past two nights ‘cos Arielle is having problem sleeping due to her blocked nose (she’d cry at night while asleep).

Anyway, woke up, took my bath, and when I looked out the window, SNOWFLAKES!

If there’s some comparison to made about winter, it would be like a woman who is beautiful to behold but with a difficult temperament to manage… really leh… winter, it’s all white, makes the surrounding so serene and peaceful, but wahlau, walking or driving in the snow is no joke man. Plus, the snow does a good job in camouflaging the road lines and dividers; literally booby traps waiting to happen if you’re not careful.
