… the frustration of having Ayl say to me ‘i’m sticky lah!’ when i try to pass him Ash. (he’s getting heavier!)

Rainy Season

Standard

it’s been raining these past few days with strong winds, loud thunder and lightning, all coming down with heavy raindrops.

i realized one thing about Kuching drivers – some tend to drive into monsoon drains! i’m not kidding…. i just witnessed a car (and it’s a WHOLE car) in a monsoon drain just now as my friends and i were on our way to pick a friend up. the people inside were standing by the roadside with their umbrellas waiting for help, while their car was in the drain with the hazard light on. wonder how it happened, hope none got hurt.

i suddenly recalled the story from Aunt Margaret telling us about her daughter with a friend who drove into a big drain quite a long time ago; and then there was Ayl’s brother who got knocked into a drain as he was trying to drive out of a junction. in just less than a month in Kuching, i’ve heard and witnessed these _______ (insert a word which defines hilarious but also dangerous) real life true events of ppl driving into big drains!

but yesterday’s rain was no joke. the wind was so strong it was scary. after the storm, mom’s papaya tree broke midway and fell, together with the many unripe fruits on it, so sayang (what a waste), they’re so nice to eat, esp when it’s home grown. some of the branches from the mango trees also broke off – mom and dad had quite a lot to clear up. a lot of unripe mangoes fell also, a lot of it were given away while some were made into pickled mangoes. what a shame, coz they’re the sweetest mangoes i’ve ever tasted when they’re ripe; no exaggeration here. some more Ayl was suggesting to mom to sell it when they’re ripe for RM20/kg. hahaha… we’re waiting for the fallen mangoes to turn into gold!

Hot, Humid, Haze & H1N1

Standard

wow… so much for the anticipated homecoming. the weather condition here is really bad, everyone at home here in Kuching was down with stomach flu and Ayl is down with flu (no, not H1N1 thank God!) come to think of it, nearly everyone we know has fallen sick – our neighbour, Ayl’s friends and their baby whom MIL is babysitting, Rachel & Ryan (the siblings MIL babysat for also), even the lady at the watchshop i went to was eating plain porridge with a huge bottle of 100plus (isotonic drink) by her side which indicates a high probability she’s also suffering from an upset stomach. and the haze is not getting any better.

HONG KONG

Arielle got sick with diarrhoea when we were in Hong Kong and today, she just got better but has developed a very wet cough, caught from Ayl. i fell sick too with stomach flu (or was it also in HK come to think of it), but thank God it wasn’t serious and it lasted just for a few days. so, because Arielle was sick, our Hong Kong trip was uneventful. we practically stayed in the apartment and ate at home at the Welch’s expense 😛 (thanks so much guys); didn’t get to go anywhere except our first day at Disneyland which was uber hot!! we had HK Dim Sum – yes it was superly nice but expensive (everything in HK is expensive!), HK’s charsiu, HK’s milk tart and breathed in HK’s very humid and polluted air… hahaha. but though the city’s packed with people, it’s clean like Singapore and due to the recent flu outbreak, a lot of public places have the automatic-waterless-sanitary-handwash machines at our disposal. good thinking there.

another thing we learnt about HK is that accommodation can get crazily expensive and SMALL!! super culture shock for us to see ‘pigeon holes’ everywhere; with apartments’ average height at 60+ levels; living space at 30 – 40 sq ft. a friend of mine said that she can actually read the subtitles off her neighbour’s tv as she sits in her own living room. i can’t even begin to imagine how it’s like in Japan. coming back to Msia made me appreciate how luxurious we actually are, where space is not as confined.

PENANG

we had Ayl’s parents join us for a week in Penang, and although i had a few things in mind planned on where to bring my in-laws (being their first ever trip to my beloved pig-land), it was too hot to bring Arielle around. so at least we covered Penang Hill, B. Ferringhi beach and most of the makan-makan; did i mention it was also the durian season? mmmmm-mmm… right time to be home.

missed out meeting a few friends i wanted to meet but had a nice surprise when some unexpected friends turned up for our small gathering over lunch/dinner. all in all, pigland is still and will always be my homeland no matter what. it was goodbye again all too soon for me.

KL

didn’t really get to do much in KL coz we stopped by only for such a short time – should really have stayed longer so that i get to shop for some things before heading off to Kuching (esp maternity clothes!!) it was all so rushed and we didn’t really get to have the time to meet up with people. esp so when we got back from HK and Arielle was sick and it was best not to tire her out too much by going out the whole day. so, mostly we got together with whoever we thought were significant to us over lunch/dinner and that was about it. we can always rely on facebook right?

so, as of current, i’ll be here in Kuching till i deliver in End Oct – and have i mentioned it’s a BOY!!; so meantime, i’ll live with Ayl’s family and hang around with baby and Arielle till Ayl comes back again from Slovakia for his winter break in End Dec (2 weeks). we will see if baby is fit enough to fly (hopefully) and if he is then all of us will fly back to Slovakia together Beg Jan – which will be in the dead of Winter, aaaahhhhhh!!! talk about from one extreme to another.

Snow stopped, but now the Rain pulak

Standard

the temp’s gone up higher the past few weeks but still below 10*C; nevertheless, thank God!! finally no more snow – didn’t know that there’ll come a day when i’ll actually say this. it’s really so much of a hassle just walking and driving in it. so much for all the fantasies i had with snow before actually living in it.

the official date for Spring is Mar 20th, which is just 2 days away now. we see more of the Sun nowadays, but it rains most of the days and unexpectedly. one min the sun is shining brightly, the other min it’s drizzling and then the strong winds come. no joke with strong winds here, can blow a kancil away man.

anyway, i feel as if there’s some kind of expectation in the air and all around. it’s like all of a sudden, stores have nicer & colourful dresses up on ‘new arrival’, bikinis are back on the shelves, there’s green grass on the long stretches of farmland along the highway to Austria (i’m waiting for flowers!!), kids are playing outside, when i wake up i’m greeted by the sun (even at 6am, it’s already bright), and my mood is lighter everyday – must be the sun; or prolly the change of the season from a depressingly long and freezing winter to my fav season of all – SPRING!

oh btw, have i mentioned that i FINALLY got my visa last thursday? well, it only just took us half a year! and i was only illegal until last thursday! 😛 so, now we can finally look to shift – we’re looking for a cheaper one, and one that is nearer to town so i don’t have to take the bus.

here’s a latest video of Arielle, one of my fav! she’s growing up so fast!

Never Ending Snow

Standard

it’s been snowing and snowing and snowing for the past 3 days, it stopped for only a short while and just when you think it’s stopped, tiny little snowflakes started floating around, and then it all came down again.  we’ve been so bored not being able to go out and Annette’s gone on holiday for the whole week (she usually drops by on Mondays and that makes all the difference throughout the week), so both Arielle and I were left staring at each other with only the few toys she has, the TV and her ever-fav-but-soon-to-be-bored-with Sesame Street videos online; think we watch it too often!  well anyways, because i don’t know what else to entertain her and myself with, and the snow stopped falling for a while, i took the opportunity to brave the freezing cold weather and went out downstairs to the private park for a stroll (or something like that). also because i thought it would be fun playing with so much snow, maybe i’d lie on it and make like an angel, you know, flap my hands up and down!

in actual, i was even more excited than arielle was coz i was so happy building snowcastles and she was getting frustrated that she couldn’t get to hold anything!! awww… so, in the end, we went back in earlier than was planned. ah! the sacrifices a mother has to make…. otherwise, i think the balcony will be filled with snow castles!! wouldn’t that be such an impressive sight for my husband when he gets back!
